Are You Starving
the Best Part of Your Mind?

WORD COUNT: 596 Short, Yet Illuminating Words
TIME to KNOW: About 2 1/2 MINUTES to Read, or 5 Minutes to Listen
Are you an avid reader or a self-improvement junky? I also enjoy
exploring new ideas, and if you're like me, you love to learn.
Yet we can get ensnared by our thirst for
knowledge. The very thing that can set us free, can also keep
us trapped in ignorance.
For the mind is so much more than a database where we can store and
retrieve information.
The mind goes far beyond the intellect. The human mind enables us
to grow in social, emotional, spiritual, as well as intellectual
intelligence. The mind facilitates the connection with the greatest
aspect of ourselves, the wise inner spirit, residing within our physical
bodies.
Yet we can starve the best part of our mind
with frenzied activity, and by continuously pouring vast quantities of
information into it, as if "out there", is where all the answers lie.
For information isn't knowledge, unless we do something with it. In
order to benefit from the information we acquire, we must give ourselves
time to observe, process, and appreciate the world around us.
To be at our best, requires time for rest.
And one of the hardest things to do in our culture is to be still. The
monkey mind, the endless thinking, and sensory overload are what starve
the best part of the human mind.
Yet you have the ability to tap into the best
part of you, by periodically letting go of outside stimulation.
Here's what I mean. Have you ever solved a difficult problem, as soon
as you let it go to rest, or focus on something lighter? We often
get the most profound insights when we walk away from an issue, instead
of mulling it over again and again.
Have you ever had an "aha moment", when you were in the shower,
taking a break, or walking in nature?
This is because your mind was still and you were relaxed. You gave
yourself time to process, and allow the answers to come. You could
receive what you were seeking, because you got out of the way. You
weren't busy pouring more information in, or caught in "hyperdrive"
thinking. So you could receive what you wanted to
know.
John Muir, a Scottish-born American naturalist, author, and founder of
The Sierra Club, once said, "One days exposure to mountains is better
than cartloads of books".
Mr. Muir, understood the value of quiet reflection, and of being awed by
the beauty that we often take for granted.
Whenever you're able to stop labeling and
categorizing stuff, you've stepped out of the mental level, and are
allowing your natural wisdom to reveal itself. Appreciating
nature is a simple way you can calm an overactive mind, and feed your
spirit.
I'm not saying stop reading or exploring, of course not. But if
you're stuck with a problem that won't go away, then maybe it's time to
give yourself a few moments to find what you seek.
Connect with the best part of your mind by giving yourself a break to
just be at peace. Let go of thoughts gone wild. Step away from the
computer, and lay down the books occasionally. Take a walk, appreciate a
flower, or smile at a stranger. Feed your spirit as well as your
intellect, and you will know the richness of a full life experience, one
that goes far beyond what you think, or could ever experience on the
mental level.
Allow the answer to come, and they surely will.
Appreciate the best in life, and more goodness will certainly come.
